Biblical Masculinity vs. the Wild Warrior Fad

Well, I thought I start out this year and this blog with an excellent post from Gordon Hackman on biblical masculinity (click here). In our culture, men are being hammered from all directions. There is no doubt that feminists and other androphobes have made men uncomfortable about their masculinity. Some consequently find a cure in stereotypical understandings of masculinity from bygone generations to counteract the widespread feminization of society. The old "tough guy" image is touted as the new answer to the identity crises many men are having. I have no problem with men who embrace stereotypical understandings of manhood as long there is no sin involved. But I have to ask--should Christian men ignore both the precepts and the liberty revealed in God's word just to take at face value the ipse dixits of self-appointed experts on the Evangelical book circuit?

I think this is the entirely predictable reaction to the cultural feminization that has occurred. We may very well end up with some oppressive system that feminists have nightmares about, and it will be their own faults.

I don't know that I can see this, per se - not saying that it's not out there.

If you're talking about "Wild at heart", I found that sort of material to ba a breeath of fresh air.

Hi Anakin,
This response is a little off topic, but I think you should check out Candice Watters' blog post from 1/3/08. I was so incensed by the way she regarded the single female writer because it was not biblical to just rip into someone the way she did.
I wrote an e-mail confronting Candice and she wrote back. However, I will have to read her response when I have more time to think.

There is no cultural feminization. Men must be sensitive and strong, very successful and very nurturing.

Modern times demand much more of men; and women won't stay home and clean up for slobs and their children anymore. Marriage is a partnership defined by women, and men need to submit to women; in the realm of Christian love of course.

Anonymous, I think "very typical Christian woman" was commenting satirically.

I'm a 20 year old christian male and this topic has been looming over me for the past year. Life has seemed to become extremely boring and i think its because i have not accepted my masculinity totally. I read 'Wild at Heart' also and found that the topics, issues etc where what i was looking for in life. But actually acting on these new beliefs is extremely hard, and i believe that it is only hard because i am worried about what women will take me for. Now this question goes out to every feminist. What i just said, does that seem morally right to you?

I'm personally sick of this victim mentallity 'girl power' attitude which women elude through many ways and i believe that i'ts the soul reason why relationships between men and women are taking a slide. We've created a society of women who want to be men and men who are turning into women.
